We love this house in Castlerock which perfectly showcases the versatility of timber frame.

Design

The architecture of the house with its big windows and desired efficiency standard, drove the construction method of the build. Its modern design with the multi-roof profile required a versatile engineering solution that only a composite steel and timber frame core could deliver.

Building core and fabric

The timber acts as a natural insulating partner and a crucial element in achieving the desired airtightness, particularly given the scale of the glazing. Embracing the sustainability ethos, the house was completed to a very high level of insulation.

In this case, the insulating materials comprise sheep’s wool, a high tech cellulose material, sealed with an insulating render.

Achieving a low energy home

Efficient form, orientation and window shape are key components in achieving a low energy home. High levels of insulation as previously outlined, together with stringent air tightness measures are all critical to achieving a high performance, comfortable home.

Another vital component of a low energy, airtight, healthy, breathing home is ventilation. The installation of mechanical heat recovery system boosts air quality and comfort and completes the drive to attain optimum air tightness.

Heating

The house relies on natural solar gain from the expansive glazing throughout as its primary heating source.
