The design was driven by 2 key factors:
- the beautiful site with its stunning views and
- its context in a rural farming setting
The architect was keen to continue along the rural and farming heritage theme in keeping with the form of the farmyard sheds in the locality. This evolved as a simple 2 sheds concept, one daytime at the front of the house (with silver zinc cladding) and one night-time (with black slate cladding). The latter cleverly slides past the former to optimise the corner views. The client was very receptive to the concept and trusting that the aesthetic and functional designs would be married and executed with exactness.
Building core and fabric
The simplicity of the shed forms favoured timber frame
construction. The timber frame core meant that much of the
engineering could be buried within the timber frame core thereby maintaining the simplicity and strong
clean lines that the shape of the building demanded.
From the architects’ perspective, one of the key benefits of a timber frame core is that it is less prone to competing movement thereby avoiding cracks common in masonry construction.
Low energy home
The thermal properties offered with timber frame is very difficult to achieve with conventional block build. All Kudos full build projects benefit from optimum insulation and air tightness levels, installed by experienced fitters. The Greenisland build has been further future proofed with the installation of an integrated renewable energy system, including a ground source heat pump and mechanical heat recovery system. The result is an extremely comfortable Kudos low-energy home.
Kudos Full Build
The architect of the Greenisland house contacted Kudos following a word of mouth recommendation from a fellow architect. Initially approaching the timber frame company for their expertise and with a view to supplying the timber frame structure, the discussion quickly opened up to the possibility of Kudos taking on the full build. After the usual negotiation on project costs, the client awarded the contract to Kudos who worked closely with the architect to achieve a high level of finish. Simplicity and clean lines don’t happen by chance!
A happy build
The Kudos Full Build solution which the client opted for, meant that there was one contract and a single point of responsibility for the delivery of their new home. With the architect and Kudos working closely and consulting as necessary, the build quality and finish has made for a very happy family home.
